Most people have these thoughts that Ireland is very Christian and Godly, since it is in Europe. Most people would also believe that it is a silly place to do missions. Some people might beleive that Ireland is too comfortable and easy for a missions trip. Correct, Ireland is not a third world country, is near Europe, not silly, and not as comfortable and easy as you might be thinking. Also, does that mean that the Irish people are not lost and might need to be reminded of God's love and grace for them?
If we never get out of our comfort zones,
we can't grow into the places God has prepared for us.
– Seth Barnes, Kingdom Journeys
Kacey, a participant from one of last year's trips, has such a heart for youth and missions. She came on the trip with her guitar, claiming she just played it for fun. Little did she know that she would be leading worship regularly for our team, but also playing on the streets and courtyards, to all the locals who walked by. I could see how nervous and anxious she was in her ability and confidence in her guitar skills, and maybe even embarassment in singing and belting it in front of a mall to strangers! But she did it. And oh man, did she do it well… and soon, this girl will be leading missions trips for Encounter. And hopefully leading worship, too!
Youth in Ireland can be very straightforward, blunt, and honest about where they are at in life. Some might consider them to be sharp or a little rough around the edges. It is common for many Irish youth to spend little time with adults, let alone Christian adults, and most of their time with other youth. They lack important and honorable mentors to show them the right way to do things, and live. The youth drop in centers that we get to help with, offers them a safe environment to escape to. These youth can get help with homework, play basketball, play video games, hang out with some amazing Christian adults, enjoy tea time, participate in arts and crafts, listen and even play music, but most importantly, be in the presence of holy people and the Holy Spirit. Everyone has that hunger for more, for God, but it might not be clear or apparent. These youth might want to be Christian, but they just need a little help- a little push.
Taylor would not consider herself to be a performer. However, she wanted the Irish people in the local parks to get a glimpse as to who Jesus is. She wanted the gospel to be presented in such a way that would lead people to realize how much they needed a relationship with Jesus. She would probably still say she is not an actress, but she put on a great show. Taylor might also claim to not be a missionary, however she is currently following the Holy Spirit, and mobilizing leaders to lead teams onto the mission field. She decided to leave her home and all the things she was used to, because of an amazing mission experience she had in Ireland. Because she was able to get outside of her comfort zone, to talk to strangers about how much God cares for them, she understands the importance in a LACK of comfort zones. Now she is able to call others out, and lead them onto the field. She gets to be a door holder for others to experience freedom. Taylor gets to give others a little push into the greatness that God has for them.
